About the Artist:
Micqaela Jones is a member of the Te-moak Tribe of Western Shoshone in Nevada. She grew up on the Duck Valley Indian Reservation of the Shoshone and Paiute Nations, located 100 miles northeast of Elko, Nevada on the Idaho border. Her youth was filled with rich visual experiences - days spent hunting, fishing, and enjoying the beauty of Nevada's outdoors with her sister and two brothers. It wasn't until later in life, as a young adult, that Micqaela began painting and showing her art at prestigious venues including Santa Fe Indian Market, Eiteljorg Museum Indian Art Market, Autry Museum Los Angeles, Cherokee Art Market, and Red Earth Market.
Cultural Significance: In many Indigenous cultures, matriarchs are the backbone of families and communities. They are keepers of knowledge, cultural traditions, and wisdom. They guide, teach, and hold families together across generations. This artwork honors their essential role and enduring strength.
